This virtual reality app lets users experience modern diving expeditions to explore the historic wreckage of Sweden’s flagship, Mars, which met a catastrophic fate after a fierce naval battle in 1564. Sinking near Åland Island, Mars is a naval engineering behemoth with over a hundred guns, rediscovered in 2011 by the Ocean Discovery after two decades of searching.

The app used a detailed photogrammetry model of the wreck site, captured on multiple dives and meticulously processed by Ingemar Lundgren over a two-year period, with virtual reality processing by our partners at Realities.

IO then transforms into an interactive experience in the prefrontal cortex. It offers two modes: Diving and Researcher. In dive mode, participants use virtual dive gear, such as dive computers and underwater cameras, to explore shipwrecks and documented artifacts. Transitioning to Researcher mode during “Resurfacing”, users analyze their findings and participate in missions that explore different aspects of Martian history – firepower, crew, and structures. Successful missions unlock diving expeditions, 3D reconstructions, and real-world photos of the ship’s extensive historical details.
